House in Ahrenshoop
Renovation of a Holiday House

Located between the Baltic Sea and an inland lagoon, the landscape of the Fishland peninsular is flat and wide-open. The clients wanted the A-frame holiday house to be renovated so as to create a feeling of living in the landscape.

Continuity of the natural space as well as of the of the built space was achieved through two features. In order to embed the house into the landscape a trellis was built over the roof to allowing the garden to grow over it. And in order to unify the space before, within and behind the house a 30m continous platform was run through it.

The wooden platform remains an empty space to be used differently according to the time of the day and year, as all functional furniture modules were built in along the two lengths of the house. In contrast to the openess of the main space a small private room accessible by ladder was built into the central one-third of the upper floor leaving the space on either side of it open to the full height of the gable.

From inside the house, one has an unimpaired view of the surrounding landscape to the front and to the back, and from the outside the house appears to be organically integrated with the landscape around it.
